Show of hands
Fiat Panda 4x4 winter edition. Granted it would need more power for US consumption, but I dig this as a cheap, fun commuter in the snowbelt.

No.

I'd rock a Panda. No shame.

I used to be scared of Italian reliability, or lack of, that is until I bought a Subaru Impreza. I'd rock one of these even if has been sold back to the dealer as a lemon law vehicle and still feel more confident in it than I do with my current Impreza.
NOTHING scares me anymore, plus it is adorable.

There is no "no" in a show of hands.

I would use the hell out of this in California, but tell me, is it available with a diesel?

Hell I live in louisiana (what is this snow thing you speak of?) and I'd rock it! I could also use the excuse that I have to drive on dirt roads atleast twice a week.

I'd rock that like a hurricane.

it is in Europe, where its actually available. 75 hp 140 ft-lbs. It would be slow, but it would get you around.

the old panda 4x4's were tough stuff, and the word is the new ones are too.

Haha. It's ridiculous how terrible this car has been, and I'm my 7th (and last) Subaru.
Headgaskets went bad before it hit 60k miles. Usually you can get to 100k before these old EJ series engines spit their gaskets out. Subaru stepped up and covered them under warranty, but they're leaking again already. D'oh! Why can't Subaru figure out how to make a damn gasket work? They've had 20 years to perfect them in this engine design. It's insane.
All the O2 sensors went bad as did the catalytic converters. After the dealership fixed the converters the car has a terrible heat shield rattle that is deafening. Nobody can isolate it either.
Park neutral safety switch has gone bad.
Driver side glass is out of whack and nobody can get it aligned. Why? I have no idea.
I've never had so many problems with a single car in such a short period of time.
Sorry for the derail, but since you asked... I thought I'd answer.

what is it that frightens you about it?

OH THAT TORQUE, 1 please.

thanks for the detail...what the hell are you doing to your car? or maybe you just got a bad one. Seriously, I have had no pboblems with subarus outside the usual CV/Rust issues. Bummer.

yeah, with the weight and the torque, 75 hp could get you around nicely, just don't expect blazing 0-60 times.

Not that one, but the previous version.
None of that pretentious designer BS.

I would drive the shit out of this.
And 1 for fun:

It really is a shame because I like the car a lot otherwise. I just drive like normal. I haven't the slightest idea why so many issues have manifested like this.
I'll drive it (nervously) a few more years and see what happens and decide what to purchase as its replacement. Maybe Panda!

I don't think its pretentious, especially compared to the previous generation, its really the same shape, just dressed up in modern language. its still pretty tame. Just wait until Jeep gets a hold of it though. That's right, its rumored that this will underpin the compass/patriot replacement...then we can talk about pretentious design.

Just when I thought I would get back to work...you show up.

I'd rock it like a landslide.
We need more good small cars.

I'm actually in the process of trying to get one. They aren't being sold where I live yet, and official imports of the 4x4 are supposed to start in 2014 but Fiat of Turkey (Birmot) is not being cooperative. I've put down a deposit for a military green 4x4, and am waiting for confirmation that it can be imported (through official channels), after which we'll be going into the options list with the dealer. So far, they're playing hardball when it comes to the Skydome double sunroof, because it's an option in Europe but they're acting like it isn't an option here.

Make sure to keep us posted, and write up a review when you get it!

would totally rock that as my ski car!

At this point it looks more likely that I'll get my deposit back, since they don't seem to be able to work out how to import it.
